In Memory Of Alex The Grey
1976-2007
On September 6, 2007, Alex
the grey passed away of unknown causes. He was 31 years of age and had been with
Dr. Irene Pepperberg for 30 years. His name is an acronym for "Avian Learning
EXperiment" but he was much more than that to Dr. Pepperberg and her team and
will be sorely missed as a collegue and wonderful friend. During his life with
Irene Alex learned to identify 50 different objects using the English language,
7 colours, 5 shapes, quantities to 6 and a zero-like concept. (and much more)
Through Pepperberg's research, Alex showed a scope of cognitive abilities never
expected in an avian species. She says that he had the intelligence of a 5 year
old. The bird community, science community and all that were exposed to this
wonderful bird will miss him terribly. To learn more, visit
